Every letter, number, and symbol on the runways, taxiways, and aprons of a Part 139 certificated airport follows one federal standard. FAA Advisory Circular 150/5340-1M sets the colors, dimensions, and proportions, so the markings a pilot reads in Atlanta are the markings they read in Denver. This guide covers what the standard specifies and how StencilFast stencils are cut to match. FAA Airport Markings Guide
Every FAA airport marking carries a required size, color, and reflectivity standard. This guide takes each marking type in turn, gives the governing dimension from the FAA's own advisory circulars, and points to the stencil that matches.

Not every runway marking is a stencil job. Centerlines, threshold bars, and touchdown zone markings are laid out and sprayed with striping equipment. The designation numerals are the stencil work, and the standard is exact about them: 60 feet tall, except the 6 and the 9 at 63 feet so their loops read correctly from the air.
This section covers what AC 150/5340-1M specifies for every runway marking, whether or not we make a stencil for it.

Why does a letter stencil come in five sizes? Because the FAA sets inscription height by sign type and taxiway width, and the stencil lineup follows it. The names convert directly: 72" is a 6 ft inscription, 96" is 8 ft, 108" is 9 ft, 120" is 10 ft, and 144" is 12 ft. Taxiway markings are yellow rather than white. This section pairs each marking and surface-painted sign with the dimension the standard calls for and the stencil that produces it.

Apron and gate markings are the one group the FAA leaves to the airport. Gate destination signs, apron entrance point signs, and apron control markings are all optional under AC 150/5340-1M, and for apron control markings the standard says the inscription is "determined by the airport operator," with flexibility acknowledged for varied apron layouts. What is not optional is how they get painted: yellow background, black inscription, black border and glass beads where the pavement calls for it. This section pairs each marking with those requirements.

Heliport markings do not require glass beads. Paragraph 4.2 of AC 150/5390-2D makes retroreflective materials optional and cautions that overuse can blind a pilot using landing lights or night vision goggles. That is the reverse of airport markings, where black borders and glass beads are required on most of them.
The table below covers the Chapter 4 markings that are cut from a stencil or laid out to a fixed dimension: heliport and hospital identification, the TLOF and FATO, and taxiway and parking positions. Chapter 4 also specifies the preferred-direction bar (4.3), extended pavement striping (4.5), flight path alignment arrows (4.7), unpaved taxiway markers (4.8.2), rotor-clearance shoulder lines (4.9.6), walkways (4.10), and closed heliport markings (4.11). Those are striping and marker work, so they are not tabled here.
